Selfishness, Insensitivity & Complacency

I was showering and this episode in SATC suddenly flashes into my mind. Carrie decides to leave New York and her whole life behind when her then boyfriend, Alexander Petrovsky, suggested that she moved with him to Paris. She was initially reluctant to leave Manhatten because she couldn’t bear to leave her friends as well as a career she loved – being a journalist. But for the sake of love, she decided to make that bold move. She enjoyed herself for the initial period she was there. But there was only so much shopping she could do and croissant she could eat. She didn’t know what else to do. She knew nobody there and plus, she didn’t speak the language. But she stuck it out and finally one day, she met fans of a book she has written. They kindly offered to organize a party in her honour and she was exceedingly excited about it. On the very same day, Alexander had an exhibition and was anxious and afraid that people may not like his works. So he begged Carrie to give up her party and accompany him to the exhibition. So she went, and as soon as they arrived, the crowd started applauding Alexander’s works and he was basking so much in the limelight that he totally forgot about Carrie’s presence. Seeing that she was not needed, Carrie made a mad dash to her party, only to find the place empty and her books being used as coasters. Understandably, her fans got angry and assumed that she was playing big shot and deliberately didn’t wanna attend the party. She was crushed. Just as she thought she could start a new life in Paris, it was dashed because she placed Alexander before herself, and he wasn’t even appreciative about it.

This made me wonder. Are men really so insensitive, selfish and complacent? So long as their purposes are met, they dun give two hoots about who or what went on around them. When they need you, they pander around you. But once you outgrow your worth and usefulness, you’re being thrown to your own devices. They dun care how much you have given up for them, so long as they achieve what they want. They dun care what may happen in the future, cos the present looks rosy.

Was Carrie wrong to give up her life for Alexander who didn’t appreciate her for who she was and what she did?
